Veggie Rx Cooking and Nutrition Classes
Would you like to learn more about nutrition and get free, fresh produce? Sign up for these free classes. They are Wednesdays at 6 pm and are taught by our friends at Fresh Approach. For each class you take, you will get a $20 voucher to spend on fresh fruits and vegetables at a Farmer's Market near you.
October 28th: How sugar affects our body
In this class we will define sugar and recognize the difference between 'naturally occurring sugar' and 'added sugars'. We will identify three foods with the larger amounts of added sugar, and describe why limiting added sugar is important to maintaining a health supportive lifestyle.
November 4th: Creating a healthy plate
In this class we will present the Harvard Healthy Plate; we will go over each component and give characteristics about each food group.
November 11th: Grocery Store Tour and Eating Healthy on a Budget
In this class we will learn strategies for planning ahead, save money and time at the store. We will also identify ways to make healthy choices for your familywhen you shoup. learn tips for healthy eating with lower cost and clear up the myth that healthy foods are more expensive than processed foods.
November 18th: Food as Medicine
We will cover topics on how food plays a major role in our health and vitamins and minerals brought by each color. We will also cover basic nutrition recommendations for people suffering chronic diseases like Diabetes, Hypertension, and Gastrointestinal Tract Disorder
Fresh Approach is a nonprofit organization born in 2008 located in the East Bay; they are on a mission to improve healthy food access in the Bay Area Communities. They bring locally- grown produce, nutrition education and gardening skill-building to Bay Area communities, so everyone has access to healthy foods. Their programs empower families to make sustainable lifestyle changes by expanding their nutrition, cooking, and gardening skills, and by boosting their access to local, affordable produce.
The Veggie Rx Cooking and Nutrition Classes are free nutrition and cooking classes held throughout the Bay Area. The program helps families make healthier food choices in a way that's fun, accessible and practical. Sample delicious healthy dishes from a cooking demonstration, learn how to identify healthy foods, and go home with 'prescription' vouchers for free farmer's market produce.
