Oxford & Cambridge Boat Race Dinner 2019, San Francisco
The 84th San Francisco Boat Race dinner celebrates the 165th Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race. Taking the form of a College Feast at an Oxbridge College, it is the one occasion each year when the alumni of the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge convene for a large-scale event in northern California. Alumni, students, academic visitors and former employees of either university are invited to attend, along with their spouses, partners and guests. The evening is held in the elegant ambience of the University Club atop Nob Hill in the heart of San Francisco. Thomas P. Campbell, Director and CEO of the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco (FAMSF), will be the distinguished guest speaker. As head of FAMSF, the largest public arts institution in Northern California comprising the de Young museum in Golden Gate Park and the Legion of Honor in Lincoln Park, Campbell oversees wide-ranging curatorial and education programs and manages a staff of more than 500. Campbell served as Director and CEO of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York from 2009 to 2017, having joined the Met as curator in 1995. During his tenure at the Met, he led a revitalization and modernization achieved through award-winning exhibitions and publications, major capital projects, and historic donations of works of art. Attendance grew by more than 50 percent to a record seven million visitors a year. Over a thirty-year career, Campbell has dedicated his life to the preservation, study and promotion of art as a gateway to human understanding. A distinguished art historian, he was educated at Oxford University and the Courtauld Institute, University of London. His book, Henry VIII and the Art of Majesty: Tapestries at the Tudor Court, a reappraisal of the art and patronage of the era, was published in 2007. Co-chairs are Matthew Kaser (Linacre, Oxford) and Alex Driskill-Smith (Caius, Cambridge). Cocktails are at 5:30 pm and dinner will be served at 7:15 pm.
