Earth Day Estuary Cleanup
Hosted by Mary Spicer, San Francisco Baykeeper, and the City of Oakland Event Partners: California Canoe and Kayak, East Bay Rowing Club, Bay Area Whaleboat Rowing Association, Oru Kayak, REI, and Trail Mavens Come celebrate Earth Day on the Oakland Estuary- join us for the Jack London Aquatic Center on-the-water trash cleanup! The Oakland Estuary is a special corner of San Francisco Bay that's home to countless marine animals and a thriving watersport community. Unfortunately, this stretch of water gets hit hard by urban trash pollution and illegal dumping. Join us in the effort to remove as much garbage from the Oakland Estuary as we can to protect our water, wildlife, and community! We'll have cleanup crews working on the water and on land to maximize the amount of garbage we collect. Volunteers who want to get out on the water can bring their own watercraft (or rent-see details below) and paddle to hard-to-reach trash hotspots with members of the local water community. Volunteers can also choose to stay on shore and join our trusty land crew to clean up the Jack London Aquatic Center waterfront. We'll come back together after our hard work is done for giveaways, snacks, and to load up the City of Oakland trash truck with all our grubby garbage finds. Register today and invite your friends- we can't wait to celebrate Earth Day with you! EVENT DETAILS: Land Crew: There are plenty of places to clean up at JLAC and the surrounding park. The area is very easy to walk and collect trash. Kids are welcome! Please have them wear sturdy shoes to protect their feet and plan to stay with them throughout the cleanup. To join the land crew, choose "Land Crew" when you register for the event. Paddle Crew: Mary Spicer will be leading our on-the-water cleanup crew. Team captains will lead groups to shoreline cleanup areas that are only accessible by watercraft. Wear sturdy shoes to protect your feet when you walk the shores. To join the paddle crew, choose "Paddle Crew" when you register for the event. If you're planning to bring your own watercraft, bring it to the JLAC Boat Ramp to meet our group by 10 a.m. We'll start the orientation and cleanup kickoff at 10:00 a.m., so do what you need to do to be ready to get out on the water after the kickoff!
